'The Simpsons' Hits Record-Breaking Run with a Renewal for Two More Seasons
Fox has ordered a 29th and 30th season of The Simpsons, which marks it as the longest-running scripted television series of all time. The additional seasons will see it tally 669 episodes, trumping the 635 episode-mark set by Gunsmoke.
The series, which began in late 1989, has been something of a cultural phenomenon, or rather a phenomenon that has crossed multiple cultures and adapted to changing social climates. It has won a slew of awards on its way to 2016.
“This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series. The Simpsons has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of Matt, Jim and Al," Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Dana Walden and Gary Newman said.
"Congratulations to everyone who works on this groundbreaking series – from the voice cast and producers to the writers and production team – you comprise one of the greatest collections of creative talent in the history of the medium. And to the millions of Simpsons fans around the world, thank you for watching all these years. We’re happy to tell you there’s lots more to come.”
Whether or not there's life after season 30 remains to be seen, though it's hard to imagine the show being off the air. That being said, it's hard to imagine that the show has had the same viewers for 28 years. If it keeps adapting, it will be fine.
