'The Walking Dead' Executive Producer on Negan's Mind Games with Rick
In the most recent episode of The Walking Dead, Negan kept tightening the noose, though at times it's more like a leash around series protagonist Rick's throat. During those events, Rick had to carry around Negan's lethal baseball bat Lucielle. Executive producer David Alpert has given some insight into Negan's reasoning.
"I think Negan is challenging Caesar Millan a little bit," Alpert said. "It's a little bit about asserting dominance, right? He wants that look in his eyes of a subserbiant dog. He kept talking about it.
"He's also been doing this from the moment we met him. He put the axe in the table of the RV and he's like, 'Hey, come and get me!' knowing, you can't do anything. I'm gonna leave you with my bat right behind me and you're not gonna hit me and that's gonna make you acklowledge that you're a beta."
Recent online theories have cropped up that Daryl was delivering Rick a message in morse code, suggesting that Rick is already, or at least being pushed toward, thinking about fighting back. In the least, the code could relate to Daryl's whereabouts, in the hopes that his long-time friend and partner will come and find him.
