Things Aren't Looking Good for Neill Blomkamp's 'Aliens' Sequel
There was a time when Neill Blomkamp's Aliens sequel was heading to theaters before Ridley Scott's follow-up to Prometheus. There was even concept art, and confirmation that the new sequel would return Ripley, Newt, and Corporal Hicks to the big screen. But the director's vision of a proper ending to Ripley's story looks as though it won't ever come to happen.
Asked on Twitter about the activity of Blomkamp's Aliens sequel, he responded to a fans question on the odds of his film happening, to which he responded, "Slim."
The film was put on indefinite hold back in 2015, put on the back burner so that Scott could finish Alien: Covenant before Alien 5 happened. Were this still the case, work on Blomkamp's film might be underway, at least behind the scenes, but it's likely that plans for the franchise have changed.
James Cameron, who directed Aliens, never agreed with killing off Newt and Hicks at the beginning of Alien 3, and Blomkamp, while not wanting to discount the third and fourth film completely, he did want be more liberal with mythology concerning them. “My favorites are the first two movies, so I want to make a film that’s connected to Alien and Aliens,” he explained. “That’s my goal. I’m not trying to undo Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection, I just want it to be connected to Alien 1 and 2.”
Hopefully, we'll learn more soon about what has happened with the film. The likely answer is that Scott feels he has much more story to tell in his prequels leading up to Alien.
