TIFF 2016 Preview: The True Stories
With the Toronto International Film Festival about to start, we take a look at the most anticipated films and the lesser known projects worth checking out at this year's festival.
Bleed for This
Miles Teller plays World Champion Vinny Pazienza. After a horrible car accident he's unlikely to walk again. But with the help of his new (former alcoholic) trainer Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart), he makes one of the most unlikely comebacks in boxing history.
Brain on Fire
Chloë Grace Moretz stars as a 24-year-old New York Post reporter. Seemingly having it all, she finds herself waking up in a hospital, unable to speak or move.
Loss of memory and hallucinations are blamed on her 'work hard, play hard' lifestyle. But soon this true story turns out to be a real-life nightmare.
Denial
Rachel Weisz and Timothy Spall battle it out in the UK courts, in this bizarre but true drama about a historian who denied the Holocaust ever took place.
As in the UK it's up to the accused to bring prove in a libel suit, historian Deborah Lipstadt has to prove the horrible events of Auschwitz actually took place during WWII, when historian David Irving (who denies the Holocaust took place) sues her for libel.
Lion
Dev Patel leads this story of Saroo, a now young Australian man, who was separated from his Indian family at the age of 5.
Nicole Kidman, David Wenham and Rooney Mara join him in search for his early roots. A journey that has him wandering all over Google Maps.
Queen of Katwe
Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo star in this true story about a young girl from Uganda, who grows up to become a master chess player.
The Bleeder
The story of the man who inspired Rocky Balboa, the New Jersey boxer Chuck Wepner.
Liev Schreiber, Elisabeth Moss and Naomi Watts star in this true story about a boxer who could take a beating like no other (and still continue the fight). A strong portrait of a man inside and outside the ring.
