Tilda Swinton Makes a Statement Regarding 'Doctor Strange' Controversy
TIlda Swinton's casting has been the only point of concern in an otherwise solid lead-up to Doctor Strange's November release. Swinton was cast as the Ancient One, traditionally a role held by an Asian character, and whitewashing claims were swirling earlier in the year.
Swinton has again addressed her decision to take the role, and is adamant that she isn't whitewashing the role by taking it. “Anybody calling for more accurate representation of the diverse world we live in has got me standing right beside them," she told EW.
“I think when people see this film, they’re going to see that it comes from a very diverse place, in all sorts of ways,” she said. “Maybe this misunderstanding around this film has been an opportunity for that voice to be heard, and I’m not against that at all.
"But I do think that when people see the film, they’ll see that it’s not necessarily a target for that voice.” Marvel has been adamant that the Ancient One “is a title that is not exclusively held by any one character, but rather a moniker passed down through time, and in this particular film the embodiment is Celtic.”
The film is out November 4, and it's unlikely that this will harm the film too drastically.
