Todd Haynes' 'Wonderstruck' to spend Half its Run-Time as a Silent Film
Following his period lesbian drama Carol, Todd Haynes is not taking any easy roads with his filmmaking prowess, instead challenging himself with his next project Wonderstruck, which is currently deep in casting.
An adaptation of the novel by Hugo author Brian Sleznick, the story follows two deaf children: a boy named Ben living in Minnesota in 1977 and a girl named Rose living in New Jersey in 1927. Deadline is reporting that the latter part of the film will be “presented as a silent film in both a nod to movie history and an aesthetic designed to capture her perspective.”
Millicent Simmonds, a newcomer to film who also happens to be deaf, has landed the role of Rose. Haynes clearly wants to target a level of authenticity while homaging the roots of cinema with what is starting to sound like a seriously powerful and intriguing drama.
Simmonds joins Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams ans Jaden Michael, and the film is set to be distributed by Amazon Studios, hopefully next year.
