Top Gun 2 Gains Val Kilmer to Return as Iceman
A sequel to the late director Tony Scott's iconic film Top Gun has been in the works for years, in so small part due to star Tom Cruise's willingness for it to happen.
The first piece of news in a long time has come to the fore though, with Val Kilmer posting on Facebook that he has been offered a role in the film; an offer to which he said yes without reading a script. His post reads:
I just got offered #topgun2 – not often you get to say “yes” without reading the script… “It’s starring Gene Hackman…” “Yes” “The director is Francis Coppola…” “Yes!” They are t involved in this production. These are examples of what an actor says yes to- like Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise!!! “Yes.” We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I’ve ever met in the film biz, but let’s fire up some fighter jets again!!!
Of course, names like Coppola and Gene Hackman are used as examples here, and are not confirmed for the film. Iceman's role as a foil to Cruise's Maverick all but ensures that Cruise will have a role to play in the sequel.
