2017 Toronto International Film Festival - Film Lineup
Is there a "Moonlight" among this year's TIFF Galas and Special Presentations?
2017 TIFF includes 14 Galas and 33 Special Presentations
President and Toronto International Film Festival CEO Piers Handling and film critic and TIFF programmer Cameron Bailey unveiled the first slate of programmes, including 25 World Premieres, eight International Premieres, six North American Premieres, and eight Canadian Premieres, including works from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, India, Egypt, and Cambodia.

Previous festivals also featured the debuts of Sam Mendes' American Beauty, Taylor Hackford's Ray, Luca Guadagnino's I Am Love, and Tom Hooper's The King's Speech. According to TIFF, 2017 offers “a refreshed, more tightly curated Festival, with a renewed commitment to bold, director-driven programming, continued support of female filmmakers, and enough star power to fuel 400,000 festival-goers.”
Among the programming highlights for 2017’s programmes, works from talented female artists include Haifaa Al Mansour’s Mary Shelley – the first female Saudi director; Dee Rees’ Mudbound, Susanna White’s Woman Walks Ahead starring Jessica Chastain, and Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut Lady Bird.
Other Galas and Special Presentation programmes include a mix of genre pics featuring – Steve Carell and Emma Stone’s Billie Jean King vs. Bobbie Riggs tennis biopic Battle of the Sexes; Margot Robbie’s Tonya Harding biopic I Tonya; David Gordon Green’s Stronger featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and the aftermath of Boston Marathon bombing; Bryan Cranston and Kevin Harts Untouchables –a remake of 2011 French film The Intouchables, about a wealthy paraplegic and an unemployed man with a criminal record who's hired to help him; The Current War featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon portrayals of rivals Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse in a race to sell electricity to the masses.
TIFF 2017 will also feature new films by directors like Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water), George Clooney (Suburbicon), Terrence Malick (Radegund), Angelina Jolie (First They Killed My Father), Darren Aronofsky (Mother!), and Alexander Payne (Downsizing).
