Ubisoft has a Very Specific Goal when it comes to the 'Assassin's Creed' Film
Ubisoft's film division kicks off with Assassin's Creed, which has a generous amount of anticipation behind it in no small way because of Michael Fassbender's leading role in the video game adaptation.
Ubisoft Europe boss Alain Corre has not shied away from what the film needs to achieve for the company. "We [Ubisoft] are not going to earn a lot of money from it. It is a lot more a marketing thing, it is also good for the image of the brand," Corre told MCVUK.
"Although we will make some money, it is not the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin's Creed to more people. We have our core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin's Creed games."
It's a refreshingly earnest statement, and it's perfectly reasonable for the company to desire more gamers from the film itself. It's a perspective from Ubisoft, rather than 20th Century Fox, so it's less a lack of faith than it is Ubisoft announcing what it hopes to gain from the film.
The film reaches theaters in December, and also stars Marion Cotillard. Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) directs.
