Watchmen babe Malin Akerman is taking a break from the blockbuster madness and will star in a new indie drama with Ryan Philippe. The low budget movie will be based on the true story of four South African combat photographers who lived during the final days of Apartheid.
The four photographers became famous for their depiction of the violence in South Africa, but only two of them are still alive today. One was killed in 1994 and another one, Kevin Carter, killed himself after winning the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.
The two survivors wrote a memoir the movie is based on, called The Bang Bang Club. It could make for a really interesting movie. Kevin Carter believed his pictures could help Africa. But at the same time a lot of people criticized him for exploiting his subjects.
Taylor Kitsch will play Carter, while Ryan Philippe will star as one of the photographers still alive today, Greg Marinovich. And Malin Akerman will play a photo editor who deals with the Bang Bang Club.
The movie will start shooting in Johannesburg next month.
The Bang Bang Club featurette (1:06 minutes) added to the Cultjer video catalog on March 9th, 2009.
