Olivia Wilde: It's really tricky to match of the two genres of western and sci-fi.
Ron Howard: I always felt the western could be tweaked for this sort of blending of genres.
Jon Favreau: The classic form of both the alien movies and the western. Bring them together and create something new. Something exciting. As a director that image was very compelling.
Daniel Craig: And I thought, what a fantastic movie. I'd love to see this movie.
Jon Favreau always talks about it as a genre mashup.
What's happened to the western is, it's gotten absorbed into other genres. If you think about Star Wars. What they did, in a very clever way, is borrow all the iconography of the west and then update it with science fiction.
Harrison Ford: Here's an opportunity to take advantage of the humanity of the western and then to fold into it a sense of contemporary interests. It's sort of an ingenious concept.
I'm sure it's been played out millions of times in kids bedrooms with their own toys. And now we can bring it to the screen.
