Wow, just wow. Vin Diesel and his gang broke all kinds of records this weekend. This is the worldwide weekend box office roundup extravaganza ticket numbers sales show about money.
Before we get into the amazing domestic numbers, let’s take a quick look at what happened overseas this weekend.
Knowing is still doing ok with another $8.6 million. Fast and Furious did well in Europe and made $30.1 million. And Monsters vs. Aliens topped with $34.2 million.
And man, was I dead on with my projection of $150 million worldwide for Monsters vs. Aliens after the weekend. The movie made $33.5 million in the US and now stands at a worldwide total of $153 million. A great number after two weekends, but it needs to keep on doing well. Monsters vs. Aliens budget is reportedly $175 million.
And then the US. Where it all went down this weekend. The biggest April opening ever. The biggest non-holiday opening. The biggest of 2009. Best opening by Universal. The biggest opening for a car movie. And the best opening by yeah you get my point. Fast and Furious opened with $72.5 million, while most experts expected it to make around $40/$50 million.
That’s 103 million worldwide already. Audiences where ready for some fast lightweight entertainment, in these dark times. It shows once again. If there’s one industry that doesn’t suffer from the economic crisis, it’s the movie industry. Even a low budget movie like Slumdog Millionaire can make over $300 million.
Next week, shitty movies like Dragonball Evolution and Hannah Montana The Movie. But also in theaters, Observe and Report.
Fast and Furious other (2:18 minutes) added to the Cultjer video catalog on April 6th, 2009.
