Paul Rudd on kissing his dog in Our Idiot Brother

Paul Rudd: My family is different in that I only had one sister. But we're a family of dog lovers too. So growing up I had dogs. I would always kiss my dog, like I'd grab the snout and kiss it. And they were like, you really kissed that dog. People are freaked out by that. And it wouldn't occur to me that some people would find that to be disgusting. A Golden, you just want to grab ‘m and kiss ‘m.

How do you create such a realistic on-screen family?

You know, working with people that you're friends with is great in many ways. And in terms of the relationships that we have in the movie it definitely helped that we were friends. Particularly with sisters. I've worked with Elizabeth Banks about five or six times and it was very easy to play brother and sister, because we know each other so well.

Keep your mouth shut! Just keep it shut! I'm sorry. This is like in prison when I told Bob about Gose. I'm pretty sure it's nothing like that.

Is there a real idiot brother?

You know, there wasn't anybody that a necessarily based this character on. There are elements from lots of people that I know. And elements of my own personality that I think are kind of inherited in the character. There's something here that poignant. There's something here that's important. And I know what that means to me. And I hope that other people that see this movie, maybe feel the same way or are effected by it in some way. And that it lands with them emotionally in some way.
