Warner Bros. Couldn't Be Much Happier with 'Suicide Squad''s Performance
Suicide Squad has been eaten alive on a number of fronts critically, though there's an overwhelming sense of deja vu as this becomes the second DCEU film to create a split between critics and fans.
Now, the film has set an August opening weekend record, though it does fall short of projections. Despite that, Warner Bros. is happy with the performance. “It bested anything that we could have expected,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president.
“The marketing campaign was brilliant and the performances by the cast, starting with Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto, were just extraordinary. They’re fun and wicked and fans enjoy it.” On the divide between critics and fans, Goldstein simply agreed.
“There’s a major disconnect with between what the critics are saying and what audiences are seeing.” Batman v Superman had a monumental drop-off after a huge opening, so we'll have to wait and see whether Suicide Squad shares the same fate.
