Watch the first trailer for David Robert Mitchell's 'Under the Silver Lake'
You know the story. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl mysteriously disappears. Boy embarks on a journey to find said girl and stumbles upon a larger, more sinister conspiracy involving wealthy socialites, balloon girls, and urban myths (Dog Killer?)?
Well, in short form that is the whimsical crux behind A24’s mysterious and eccentric first trailer for Under The Silver Lake, written and directed by David Robert Mitchell.
Yes, that David Robert Mitchell whose follow up comes three years after his spectacular feature debut It Follows. Ever since IT's Cannes premiere in 2014, fans including myself have been anxiously awaiting what’s next for the talented filmmaker. Finally we have our first glimpse at what appears to be Mitchell's next creative gem.
Under the Silver Lake, stars Andrew Garfield as Sam, a genial but aimless young man, who quickly finds himself in over his head as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of his beautiful neighbor (Riley Keough). As Sam begins to decode a series of clues (or "secret messages" as Sam puts it) to Sarah's whereabouts, he stumbles upon a larger, more sinister conspiracy.
While Mitchell's latest is being described as a modern day noir crime thriller, Silver Lake infuses a bit of comedy on top of the layered eccentricities you would come to expect from a David Lynch, Paul Thomas Anderson or Coen Brothers joint. However you want to describe it, I'm sold. But check out the trailer and decide for yourselves!
Under the Silver Lake will debut in select New York and Los Angeles theaters June 22, followed by a nationwide expansion.
