Weekend Box Office: Records Pile up for the Revived Space-Opera Franchise
It might not come as a surprise to know that Star Wars: The Force Awakens came in at top spot for its opening weekend. It did so emphatically, and expectedly, by grossing $238 million domestic in its first three days.
This stat breaks Jurassic World's record-breaking $208.8 million earlier this year, and does so comfortably. And it makes a mockery of 2012's record-breaker The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ($84.6 million). The Force Awakens is also the first film ever to open with $100 million or more with a December release.
There will be more records to break in the coming weeks, and maybe even the holy grail that is Avatar's domestic and worldwide all time box office record.
Second for the weekend is Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, with a measly (comparatively) $14.4 million. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, after four weekends on top in a row, fell to fourth place.
Additionally, Star Wars grossed $279 million internationally, for an enormous $517 million dollar opening weekend. Is there really any other story worth telling this week, regarding the number one stat for studios the world over?
