Why 'Midnight Special' Director Jeff Michols Turned Down 'Aquaman'
Aquaman is just another DC property on its way to the big screen, though this one is particularly exciting given that the character is long overdue for some redemption in the eyes of the casual audience. The King of the Sea is widely considered a joke, though hopefully James Wan can repair the image.
Wan comes from Furious 7, so expect an action-packed journey into the ocean. But before he was brought on to direct, Jeff Nichols was approached following his work on Mud, with garnered him plenty of buzz and led to Warner Bros. standing at his doorstep.
The director, whose next picture Midnight Special is getting a lot of attention, explained why he declined the job. "The trick with Midnight Special is even though it was made at the studio, the gave me a lot of control over the process. And I don't mean control over final cut, but it felt like we were making one of my movies.
"I had my team. I had my family there. My crew. We made the movie we all wanted to make. With the DC universe, so many parts of it had been activated and so many decisions had already been made that it felt more and more - and Warner Bros. agreed - that it was me trying to jump on a moving train. That's not so much what I'm good at. I'm more of a ground up kinda guy."
Despite not being interested in that kind of environment, the director is a fan of comic books, and wholeheartedly believes in the connectivity and precise planning of the franchise.
Aquaman arrives in 2018.
