'Wicked' Stage-to-Film Adaptation Gets a Release Date
Universal confirms that their adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked is definitely happening with the announcement of a release date.
Wicked is the story of the Witches of Oz before Dorothy arrived in the town in The Wizard of Oz. The studio has set December 20, 2019 for its release, set for an end of year prime box office slot, though this slot also pits it against Disney's unrevealed as-yet live-action fairy tale film.
Stephen Daldry has been on board to direct the film since way back in 2012, and Marc Platt is on board as producer, having produced the Broadway show as well. Writer Winnie Holzman and composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz are re-teaming for the script, having collaborated on the Broadway show prior.
Wicked tells the tale of young witches Elpheba and Glinda as youths, going from rivals to best friends and then rivals again within the magical realm of Oz.
