Wolverine 3 Open to Possibility of R-Rated Swan Song for Hugh Jackman
Director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) recently made bold statements regarding Deadpool's originality, expecting that its originality will become a sought after luxury that will quickly diminish its unique appearance.
And it seems that he was right, at least at this point. An R-rated X-Force film is already being teased, and now it seems 20th Century Fox wants to tackle this new formula head on before anyone else gets a taste. Now, rumour has it that Wolverine 3 is also being considered for the R-rated treatment.
The rumour first surfaced at Toy Fair, where reportedly (via ComicBook.com) Fox was handing out pamphlets suggesting that an R-rating is being target for the new film. Considering production hasn't even begun, the topic will be heavily discussed but Fox will not have come to a sound conclusion yet (assumedly).
It would be a sharp deviation from past Wolverine iterations, a character who has only ever appeared in PG-13 superhero flicks. It would, on the surface, mark a fitting and unique end to Hugh Jackman's tenure with the character.
The possibility isn't new, though it is coming to light in the wake of Deadpool's success. Back in 2013 Jackman confirmed discussions with the studio regarding the possibility of making an R-rated Wolverine film.
The film is set for a March 3, 2017 release date.
