X-Men: Apocalypse Director Set to Take a Break from the Superhero Franchise
X-Men: Apocalypse has seen mixed reviews from critics. Despite that, it's proving to be a success at the box office, opening under Days of Future Past but by no means poorly. Despite that, it looks as though director Bryan Singer will be taking a break of sorts from Fox's benchmark franchise.
Speaking with the LA Times, Singer described a recent interaction that led him to do some serious thinking: “I recently met Danny Boyle — he and I have known of each other for many years but never met. He was prepping “Steve Jobs” at the time and I was doing this and he said, “Are you going to be doing ‘X-Men’ movies forever?”
"And I didn’t actually say no."
“The reality is, even though I’m very desperate to jump to something completely different, I’ve spent so many years in this universe and I love this cast and the characters so much, I just don’t see myself abandoning them forever. Perhaps as a consultant, as a producer, even as a director, I could see myself returning in the future. Just right now, once this one is done, I’d like to do something really different.”
There are two unannounced X-Men films slated for 2018, as well as one for next year, and it's up to speculation on which place the next mainline X film will take. That could make all the difference on whether Singer will be back for it, or whether a new director will take over for the seventh film in the franchise.
