'X-Men: Apocalypse' Eclipses 'Days of Future Past' in Thursday Opening Night Box Office
X-Men: Apocalypse is the sixth part in the core franchise, bringing to a close the prequel trilogy. And while Apocalypse isn't doing quite so well critically as its most recent X-Men films, Days of Future Past and Deadpool, it has opened with plenty of promise for commercial triumph.
Deadline reports that Apocalypse has earned $8.2 million from its Thursday night domestic opening, showing in 3,565 theaters. Days of Future Past, conversely, earned $8.1 million. That film earned $35.5 million on its first day, while The Last Stand is still triumphant with $41.5 million in the franchise.
Alice Through the Looking Glass took $1.5 million on Thursday, second to X-Men. Apocalypse is projected for $100 million, maybe more, for its four-day Memorial Day opening weekend. Fox is projecting $80 million plus.
Audience so far have taken to Apocalypse more favourably than critics, with a 73% Rotten Tomatoes average versus critic's 46%.
