10. The Way Way Back
"I've always been there. Ever since I was a small Cambodian child. Of course, that was after 'Nam. I was in the shit. Then I joined the circus to become a clown fighter. I know about 46 ways to kill a clown. I hate clowns. I'm kidding except for the part where I really do hate them." — Owen
The brilliance of The Way Way Back lays squarely at its ability to balance adolescence and adulthood as a sweet-natured comedy. The Way Way Back is a delicately poised comedy. Itʼs affecting, funny and worthy of being talked about far more than it has been. Prior to his turn in Foxcatcher, this is our first glimpse at Steve Carell in more darker manner. Weʼre so used to him being the loveable goofball, but seeing him as the controlling sleazy boyfriend, adds a pleasant range to this brilliant cast of characters. Itʼs a little gem of a movie that has something bracingly fresh about its approach to the coming-of-age genre.
