AMC's 'Preacher' Wins Over SXSW Audience
AMC's upcoming series 'Preacher' debuted at SXSW festival on Monday and received a very pleasing reception from the attending audience.
The SXSW audience seemed to love the fast-paced premiere episode as they laughed with its comic ultra-violent wit; which will likely see critics making comparisons with 'Deadpool.'
After the screening, Seth Rogen — who is an executive producer on the show — marvelled at how funny the episode went down, claiming he didn't realise the extent of its humour.
One scene that played exceptionally well with the audience — and will likely draw those comparisons with 'Deadpool' — featured the character Tulip (played by Ruth Neega), who takes part in a brutally and darkly comic fight in a car set to Carly Simon's "You're So Vain." Of course, this sounds very much like the opening to Deadpool, but Rogen did say at Comic-Con last year, "We both ripped off a lot of movies I'm sure.'
'Preacher' is one of two religious-themed TV dramas debuting at SXSW this year, the other is 'Outcast' from 'Walking Dead' creator Robert Kirkman. 'Preacher' will debut May 22 on AMC, following the mid-season finale of 'Fear the Walking Dead.'
