An MPAA Study Shows 2014's Blockbusters Attracted More Male Moviegoers Than Female
A new study from the MPAA has revealed that 2014's blockbusters attracted a more male audience than female, asking the question, are today's blockbusters too male orientated?
The movies that were most guilty of attracting male moviegoers where Transformers: Age of Extinction, which was made up of a 58% male audience; Guardians of the Galaxy had a 59% male crowd; Captain America: The Winter Soldier brough in 58% men; and The LEGO Movie brought in a 55% male attendance. The only blockbuster from 2014 that didn't have a male orientated audience was The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1, which had a 57% audience of females.
Caucasians dominated the amount ticket buyers to these film, but the report suggests that diversity at cinemas is increasing. Transformers: Age of Extiction attracted the most diverse of audiences out the top grossing movies of the year, with 22% African-American, 26% Hispanic and 14% Asian attending the movie. However, The LEGO Movie was the least diverse, bringing in an audience that was 12% African-American, 16% Hispanic and 8% Asian.
The numbers MPAA have revealed doesn't feature the highest grossing movie in the U.S., American Sniper, with it predominately doing much of its business in the first two months of 2015, however, it is expected that American Sniper will have attracted a male heavy audience.
