'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Dominates Overseas; 'Furious 7' Remains Number 1 in the U.S.
The April Box Office closed to a whimper this past weekend. Two new movies opened (The Age of Adaline, The Water Diviner), yet only one managed to crack the top ten. However, Marvel had reason to cheer as their latest superhero blockbuster, Avengers: Age of Ultron, dominated the international box office, a week before to its U.S. release.
Age of Ultron opened in 44 international territories over the weekend and brought in a whopping $201.2 million and was number one in all countries. 175 IMAX theatres accounted for $10.4 million of that total, an international IMAX record for a movie not opening in China. This number surpasses last year's Intersteller, which made $7.2 million in IMAX cinemas. Avengers: Age of Ultron reigned supreme in Korea with $28.2 million, the UK with $27.3 million, and Russia with $16.2 million.
Back in the States, Furious 7 continued to dominate the competition. It ended its four-week run at number one with $18.2 million, down 38% from last weekend. During the week, Furious 7 passed the $300 million marker, and after this weekend it has grossed $320.5 million domestically, which is more than all but three 2014 releases.
Internationally, Furious 7 continues to be a juggernaut, with it being the fastest movie to gross a billion. It is also the highest-grossing movie in China ever with $323 million in just 15 days. Compare that to the four weeks it took to gross that same amount in North America. The worldwide total for Furious 7 has reached $1.322 billion, which is the fifth-highest movie ever.
Kevin James’ comedy sequel, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, remained in second place at the U.S. Box Office with $15.5 million. That's down 35% from its opening weekend, bringing its domestic total to $44 million in ten days. They're good numbers for a movie that has been totally panned by critics.
The time-spanning period drama The Age of Adaline, which stars Blake Lively and Harrison Ford, opened in 2,991 theatres and was able to bag $13.4 million to take third place. DreamWorks Animation’s Home remained in fourth place with a 22% drop to gross $8.3 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $153.8 million.
Low-budget horror movie Unfriended took a 61% nose dive in its second weekend. This meant the movie dropped to fifth, bringing in $6.2 million. So far, it has a gross of $25.2 million after ten days.
