Bat Flick
It's that time of year where we debate about something that is so close to our hearts that it affects our friendships, relationships, sleep patterns and the way we even compose a tweet. That's right...The arrival of a new Batman is upon us.
Once again we dawn the new age of a man dressed as a giant bat. We all have our own idea of who Bruce Wayne/Batman is and how he should look, act, talk, and most importantly kick the ever so loving snot out of people who threaten Gotham City. Depending on the era you were raised in, we all have our favorite actor that has suited up in the cape and cowl.
In my mind, Michael Keaton is the best Batman to date. He had the look, the charm, the intimidating swagger that radiates a 'don't look at me or I'll break your face' vibe. The only complaint I have about the wonderful Keaton is that he played Bruce Wayne as Clark Kent. Clumsy and sort of dorky at times. But then again we had Mr. Clooney, who didn't emote any clear character traits to differentiate Bruce from the Bat. Also the bat nipples. Over the years we have had many different actors call Gotham home. Val Kilmer, Christian Bale... and yes I didn't forget Mr. Clooney. I didn't want to mention Bat nipples again but you had to have seen this coming. I understand it's not his fault that the costume had nipples, or that he had a bat credit card, or that he has ice skates hidden in his boots. Good lord, did I just describe Batman?
Now it's 2016 and a new actor with a perfectly sculpted butt chin is donning the bat symbol. Ben ''Amazing in phantoms'' Affleck! Now I admit at first when the news broke of Ben's casting my mouth dropped to the floor and grunted the word huh? But like other castings in the past I decided to wait and see Ben in action when the trailer was released. Right away I was sold just by looking at him as Bruce Wayne. Bruce is the character that is harder to nail down in my opinion. Anyone can toss on a suit and look bad ass, but to pull off a character that is so tormented by the loss of his parents that he dedicates his life to protect those from harm... that's the real story.
In the second trailer Bruce tells Alfred: "If we believe there is even a one percent chance that he is our enemy, we have to take it as an absolute certainty." That level of concern that Ben displays is true and something that Bruce would take seriously. Ben visually looks just like the 1992's Batman the Animated series depiction. The older, run-down man who gave so much to his city that all he had left were cuts and bruises and more than likely really, really bad dreams. To close, Ben might just be the best Bat yet, but then again I thought Daredevil was going to be a hit.
