Early Oscar Predictions for the Best Actress Category

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong Very much unlike the Best Actor category, it seems as though this years Best Actress category may be a one horse race again with a distinct lack of real competition.

it's a one horse race

The Best Actress category at next year's Academy Awards has the same feeling as last years. Cate Blanchett walked away with the gong for her role in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine in one of the most predictable categories of last years Oscars. Blanchett also won the same corresponding awards at the Golden Globes and BAFTA's and we have the feeling Julianne Moore may be looking at a similar thing. Moore is by far the favourite for the Oscar for her role in Still Alice. It goes without saying, this is Moore's to lose in quite easily the most one sided acting category. They'll be big names nominated alongside her, but their performances don't quite live up to the billing of Moore's.

Reese Witherspoon gives a strong performance in Wild but unfortunately the previous Oscar winner (Walk the Line) will come up short this time around. Rosamund Pike, who stars in David Fincher's Gone Girl, will most likely land her first Oscar nomination for her portrayal of missing wife, Amy Dunne. We also expect Felicity Jones to land a nod from the Academy for her role as Stephan Hawking's wife Jane in The Theory of Everything. Amy Adams will most likely feature in the nominees list for her supposedly great portrayal in Tim Burton's, Big Eyes. Not much has been seen from Big Eyes so far, but if early reviews appear to be accurate, expect Adams to be handed a nomination. Adams may well be Moore's strongest competitor.

the dark horse

Now, let's put this straight; we wholeheartedly expect Julianne Moore to sweep the board during this years award season but there is an interesting development brewing regarding Jennifer Aniston and her upcoming movie, Cake. Cinelou Releasings are distributing Cake and will officially give it a shot at trying to gain Aniston a Best Actress nomination, given the weak nature of this years category. You can't help but appreciate this upstart distributor— giving all they've got in trying to land one of the world's most loved actress her first Oscar nomination. In all honesty, it would be quite fitting given we expect Angelina Jolie to possibly land a Best Director nomination for Unbroken and her hubby Brad Pitt (Aniston's ex) to be in contention to land a Best Picture nomination for his produced movie, Selma. How that story would make for plenty of gossip magazine headlines.
