'Fifty Shades of Grey' Sequels Could Be On The Way
Even though the first movie has yet to be released, Focus Features announced that they will indeed green light a sequel— possibly two— of the romantic drama based on the incredibly popular books of the same name.
This a bold move by Focus Features to unveil plans for sequels before reaction to the first movie has even been heard. But when you look at the facts, you can't blame Focus Features for being a little confident.
On the surface Fifty Shades of Grey has the feeling of a disaster in terms of cinematic approach but a triumph in the realms of commercial allure. Already the movie has helped boost January movie ticket sales by 37% compared to last year and is on course to becoming one of the biggest Valentine's Day releases in history. So we understand why Focus Features are feeling confident.
MTV first reported the news after a fan screening event this past weekend, which had author E.L. James, stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, and director Sam Taylor-Johnson all in attendance. It is worth noting that this announcement isn't concrete. If the movie is a flop and is panned by critics and fans of the books, Focus don't have to go through with the decision— they've covered themselves both ways, in other words.
If it's all positive, it is likely that they’ll base the sequels on the two other books from the Fifty Shades trilogy: Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. At this stage it is unclear which of the talents from the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey would be back for the sequel. Dakota Johnson has said she’d be happy to return, and Jamie Dornan admitted he'd be like to return.
Fifty Shades of Grey opens worldwide in theatres on the 13th February 2015.
