'Home' Gives DreamWorks Much Needed Box Office Boast; 'Get Hard' Starts Strong
Home brought a much needed win at the Box Office for DreamWorks Animation this past weekend after a recent rough spell for the studio.
DreamWorks’ latest effort Home was the big box office winner bringing in an estimated $54 million. It still has a long way to go before surpassing its $135 million budget and making a profit, but the animated film has yet to be released in foreign territories, so there is more profit potential for the movie.
Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart's newest comedy, Get Hard, also started strong coming in second. The movie took $34.4 million and looks like it'll break a profit on its $40 million productiom costs. It's no surprise that Get Hard started strong given its two very popular leads. Although the movie is a rather predictable, more-of-the-same from these two comedic actors, audiences are clearly still interested in what they both have to offer.
Horror film, It Follows, opened to wide release this weekend, and the critically acclaimed movie brought in an estimated $4 million, which does not sound like much, but follows the trend of previous low-budget horror productions. It is expected It Follows may become one of this year stand-out indie releases. Kingsman: The Secret Service proved itself to be a strong endurance runner with audiences as it brought in an estimated $3.1 million this weekend, adding to a strong worldwide gross that currently stands at $327.7 million after seven weeks of release.
Insurgent came in third with $22 million, and Disney's retelling of Cinderella brought in $17.5 million, both turning in solid numbers. Liam Neeson's Run All Night struggled, adding an estimated $2.2 million to its underwhelming $23.8 million domestic total, while The Gunman, came tenth, flopping even more this weekend after brining in just over $2 million.
