Is Benedict Cumberbatch in talks with Marvel to become Doctor Strange?
Marvel seem to enjoy talking to every big name actor in the world as to whether they'd be interested in playing one of their characters. They've certainly done that with the casting of Doctor Strange.
They've been going back and forth with numerous actors as of late. There was strong reports that Ethan Hawke was almost certain to be signing on the dotted line to play Doctor Strange, but that report seems to have vanished without a trace. The reports of Hawke taking the role came off the back of Joaquin Phoenix supposedly rejecting the role. Every day seemed to bring a new name to the table; Jared Leto, Ewan McGregor, Matthew McConaughey and Oscar Isaac— we've probably missed a few there! But now, the merry-go round seems to be slowing down and Marvel look to be closing in on Benedict Cumberbatch.
Variety reports Cumberbatch has recently entered negotiations for the Marvel movie. One potential sticking point is scheduling. Cumberbatch remains committed to his lead role in BBC’s Sherlock, and Doctor Strange would have to work around that.
In standard Marvel fashion, they plan multiple films for Doctor Strange, with the character possibly featuring in future Avengers sequels.
