Is The Expendables a dying franchise?
Sylvester Stallone reunites with his action hero buddies once again for the third instalment of The Expendables franchise, but could face strong opposition from other male-orientated movies (Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), which given the domestic drop of the second movie, could be too much for The Expendables 3.
SYNOPSIS
Barney and his team, known as "The Expendables", come into conflict with ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks, the Expendables' co-founder, who is determined to destroy the team.
Prediction
One notable change from the previous two Expendables movies is rating. The first two where R-Rated (18) and a switch to a PG rating will favour The Expendables in receiving the financial boost it badly needs. The additions of Ronda Rousey and Natalie Burn will help give the franchise a much needed boost in the female demographic, along with the inclusion of Wesley Snipes, who'll no doubt attract a key African-American demographic. Harrison Ford will add more appeal as he's in the news a lot these days with the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII on its way but these much needed improvements still won't increase box office performance. The second film made $85M at the box office, which was an $8M drop from the original movies $103M taking. That isn't a great sign that this franchise is in good shape.
