'Jurassic World' Cracks $400M at Domestic Box Office; 'Inside Out' is Pixar's Second Best Opening
Is there any record Jurassic World and Universal aren't breaking? Forget the dino flick breaking $300M in eight days, it's gone one better.
With early numbers coming in, Jurassic World is on course to break the $400M marker at the domestic box office in just ten days. By Sunday, the blockbuster will have reached the marker in record time surpassing Marvel's The Avengers which achieved the feat in 14 days back in the summer of 2012. By Monday, Jurassic World will become the highest grossing title in its franchise, knocking its older brother Jurassic Park ($402M) to one side. What makes Jurassic World's achievement even more impressive is Jurassic Park made its total of $402M in three stages; its original 1993 release, its 2011 re-release and its 2013 3D re-release. In addition to all that, Jurassic World will post the best second weekend haul of all-time with a current projection of $106M-$108M at 4,291 theatres, bumping The Avengers down into second place.
Another movie performing strongly at the box office is Pixar's Inside Out. The studios new animated feature was expected to be overshadowed by the force of Jurassic World. However, the movie has faired up pretty well and is now Pixar's second biggest opening release behind Toy Story 3. The new movie is on pace to a bow of an estimated $83M at 3,946 cinemas. It's a little bit behind Toy Story 3 which managed a total of $110.3M, but it's far better than experts first perceived. Inside Out has surpassed the studios previous release, 2013’s Monsters University, which opened with $82.4M. The last 14 Pixar movies all opened at the number one spot, but Inside Out will unfortunately end that streak with it poised to finish in second place behind the dinosaurs.
