'Jurassic World' Dominates US Box Office with $204.6M; Sets Record For Global Opening with $511.8M
The dinosaurs have returned to the top of the box office standings after Jurassic World debuted to a dominant $204.6 million at the domestic box office this weekend.
the feast...
Universal and Legendary Pictures shelled out a lot of money — $150 million to be exact — to bring Jurassic World back from the brink, and it seems to have paid off. With it being a decade since Jurassic Park III was released, the new release has seemingly rejuvenated interest in the franchise with Jurassic World opening this past weekend to a staggering $204.6 million in the US. It also set a record for the biggest global opening in history, adding another $307.2 million overseas, taking its overall worldwide opening release to a unbelievable $511.8 million.
Most forecasters predicted Jurassic World to open in the region of $177 million-$181 million in the US, with no one considering the dino flick would break the 200-marker.
“This is some pretty rarefied air,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s distribution chief. Jurassic World opened on 4,273 screens, the widest release in Universal history.“It gave people all around North America the opportunity to see the film, especially in those great large formats and 3D,” said Carpou. “That created the possibility that it could grow beyond what the historical data indicated it would do.”
Jurassic World is officially the biggest opening this year so far beating out Avengers: Age of Ultron, which took a very impressive $191.3 million opening in May. However, Jurassic World lays in second place on the all-time opening weekend rankings behind 2012’s, Marvel’s The Avengers, which snagged a $207.4 million debut.
...AND the FAMINE
With Jurassic World eating up almost all the market share this weekend, the remaining releases literally had crumbs to feast on. In second place, Melissa McCarthy’s Spy slipped less than 50% to $16 million in its second weekend. Spy has grossed $56.9 million in two weeks. In third place was San Andreas which picked up $11 million, taking its domestic total to $119.3 million. Insidious: Chapter 3 finished in fourth with $7.3 million, and Pitch Perfect 2 completed the top five with a $6 million weekend, taking its domestic haul to $170.7 million.
