'Jurassic World' Expected to Have Another Strong Weekend; 'Ted 2' and 'Inside Out' Predicted to Follow Suit
Last weekend, Universal's Jurassic World set more records in its second week at the box office and this coming weekend looks like more of the same.
Only two movies could challenge Jurassic World for the top spot with Pixar's Inside Out expecting a strong second weekend, and Seth MacFarlene's potty mothered teddy bear returning to the big screen. Both movies are predicted to fair well with audiences, but neither seem capable of toppling those dinosaurs.
After beating Marvel's The Avengers to the best second weekend total, and reaching the $400M marker at the U.S. box office in record time, Jurassic World has its sights firmly set on beating Avatar's third weekend total of $68.49M. However, industry experts are suggesting Jurassic World will post a decline somewhere in the 40% range, taking No. 1 with $60M this weekend. A rival studio chief talked about the phenomomum of the dinosaur flick stating, “I think it’s going to make $600 million at the domestic box office.” That would put Jurassic World fourth on the all-time domestic grossers list behind Avatar($760.5M), Titanic ($658.7M) and Marvel’s The Avengers ($623.4M).
Disney Pixar’s Inside Out is also looking for a big second weekend with a similar decline to Jurassic World, putting the animated feature in the number two spot with an estimated $50M-52M. Earlier this week, the movie passed the $100M threshold at the domestic box office.
This weekend also marks another Universal release in adult comedy sequel, Ted 2. The first Ted opened to $54.4M on June 29, 2012, and the industry thinks the sequel will take third place in the box office standings with as much as $45M-$50M. Trailers and promotional material for the R-rated comedy have gone down very well with fans, along with reviews claiming its more of the same crude and laugh-out-loud jokes that made the first movie such a hit.
