'Jurassic World' Top of Box Office for Fourth Straight Week; 'Terminator Genisys' Struggles
For the fourth straight weekend, Universal's Jurassic World finished the weekend in first place, making it the second Universal movie of the year to achieve the milestone after Furious 7, which dominated the month of April.
The Battle for NUmber One
Although Disney-Pixar's latest animated release lead the way for parts of the July 4th weekend, it slipped away on Sunday, allowing those dinosaurs to roar ahead and claim victory during a very poor weekend holiday.
Jurassic World added $30.9M over the weekend, but took a hit of 44%on its audience from last weekend. So far, the domestic gross for the blockbuster currently stands at $558M, surpassing Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight to become the fourth-higgest grossing movie domestically. Worldwide the dinos have packed a serious punch, grossing $1.4 billion to date, and added another $42M in 66 territories this weekend.
Inside Out is a worthy competitor to Jurassic World even though it failed to capture the number one spot for the third weekend in a row. On Friday, it took $12.5M landing it in first spot. However, poor attendance figures at theatres on the Saturday (July 4th), lead many of the top movies currently in release to take big hits. Inside Out's total weekend finished at $30.1M, down 43% from last weekend. It currently stands at a gross of $246.2M domestically, which makes it Pixar’s seventh-highest grossing movie domestically after just three weekends. This total also means Inside Out nudges My Big Fat Greek Wedding aside as the highest-grossing movie to never hit the number one spot at the box office standings.
Terminator Genisys struggles, Magic Mike Bombs
Both Terminator Genisys and Magic Mike XXL opened to previews on Wednesday night with the Channing Tatum stripper sequel attracting the ladies to the party, leaving Arnold Schwarzenneger in the cold. However, things changed by Friday when the fifth movie in the Terminator franchise pulled ahead of Magic Mike XXL with a $10.7M outing. It's strong Friday couldn't propel it ahead of Jurassic World or Inside Out, who both have serious starngle holds over the box office right now. By Sunday evening, Terminator Genisys closed the weekend out with a third placed $28.7M during its Friday to Sunday showings. During its five day opening bow, the Terminator racked up $44.2M. The movie opened worldwide with its global gross currently standing at $130M with $85.5M coming from overseas.
Magic Mike XXL started out strongly on Wednesday taking $9.3M (which also includes $2.4M from Tuesday night previews). By Thursday, the sequel had dropped off pace significantly and by Friday, managed a subdued $6.3M. It finished its opening five-day haul at a total of $27.1M. That is considerably less than the $39M three-day opening of Magic Mike back in 2012.
Ted 2 Takes a Nose-Dive, Amy Winehouse Doc starts strong
Seth MacFarlene's R-rated comedy sequel Ted 2 took a huge nose-dive in its second weekend. The movie dropped into fifth place at the domestic box office with a 67% decline in audience numbers. It managed only $11M this weekend, taking its domestic gross to $58.3M. It has taken $94.2M worldwide.
Opening in only six theatres on Friday, director Asif Kapadia's (Senna) intimate and heartfelt documentary, Amy, which examines the gifted yet troubled singer Amy Winehouse's life, opened to a fantastic $222,000, which equates to $37,000 per theatre. By next weekend, the acclaimed documentary will expand into a greater number of cinemas.
