Kung Fu Panda 3 will not go up against Star Wars at the box office
There isn't much surprise that DreamWorks Animations have decided to back down and not go head-to-head with Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens at the box office next year.
DreamWorks Animations announced that they will move the release date of the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 3 from its original 23rd December 2015 release date to a more sensible 18th March 2016 release. The reason behind this move is quite obvious; they just know they'll be taken down by the force of the new Star Wars movie.
This change will leave the upcoming animation, Home, as DreamWorks Animation's only 2015 release. DreamWorks Animations movies are distributed by Fox, and they also mentioned they may move the scheduled release date for another of their movies, B.O.O.: Bureau Of Otherworldy Operations, from its 5th June 2015 date. So far, no new release date has been announced.
“Kung Fu Panda is one of DreamWorks Animation’s most treasured properties, and we want to make sure it is positioned where it has the best chance to reach the broadest audience,” said Fox President of Domestic Distribution, Chris Aronson. “In reviewing the competitive landscape, which we do on an ongoing basis, we feel that the spring availability does just that — it gives Kung Fu Panda 3 the maximum amount of air to breathe in order to have a long, successful run.”
Kung Fu Panda 3 isn't the only movie that has dropped out of the box office battle with Star Wars. Recently, Universal Studios pushed the upcoming Warcraft movie from its 18th December 2015 slot to a more favourable March 2016 date.
