Paul Feig's 'Spy' Takes Number One Spot with $30 Million Opening
The first weekend of June kicked off Paul Feig's action-comedy Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, grossing $30 million in its opening weekend.
Spy opened in 3,711 theatres with it earning $10.3 million on Friday, after taking $1.5 million from Thursday previews. After Friday's numbers came in, Spy was actually second to the another new opener, Insidious: Chapter 3. However, Spy picked up its game on Saturday and Sunday, and ended up with an estimated $30 million for the weekend. That total falls behind the $39 million grossed by McCarthy and Sandra Bullock's, The Heat (another Feig film), but it was a much better opening than McCarthy’s previous release, Tammy.
Disaster blockbuster San Andreas, starring Dwayne Johnson, dropped to second place with $26.4 million. That's down 52% from its opening weekend, but it is edging closer to the $100 million marker, with its current gross standing at $99.1 million in North America.
Insidious: Chapter 3, the third instalment in the horror franchise, opened in first place on Friday with $10.4 million after taking $1.6 million from Thursday previews. As expected, the horror prequel dropped off ending up with an estimated $23 million for the weekend, finishing in third place. Considering the movie was made for $10 million, these numbers means it's not far away from being in profit.
Warner Bros. and New Line’s revival of HBO's Entourage grossed $5.4 million after its Wednesday opening day (including Tuesday previews). It dramatically fell away by Thursday, and headed into the weekend with $7.4 million. With another $10.4 million between Friday and Sunday, Entourage finished with $17.8 million from a five-day opening. That is nothing to get excited about.
