Pixar's 'Inside Out' and 'Dope' Have Strong Previews; 'Jurassic World' Fastest Movie to $300M Domestically
Pixar's newest animated release took in strong numbers during its Thursday previews alongside a strong opening for Sundance hit Dope.
During late night previews, Inside Out took $3.7 million which is Pixar or Disney's strongest return from a Thursday preview. The total beats Monsters University ($2.6M), Big Hero 6 ($1.4M), Frozen ($1.2M), and Wreck-It Ralph ($400k). With these opening numbers, experts are predicting an opening weekend total in the range of $60M-$65M for the animated flick which will open on Friday to 3,946 theaters across the United States. It's strong performance may lay behind its strong favourable reaction after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival a few weeks back, and with it being Fathers Day this weekend, it could drive families to the cinema even though its narrative focuses on a mother-daughter story.
Open Road's teen comedy Dope also opened to healthy preview numbers. The independent flick brought in $425k from midnight shows. Industry figures suggest an opening weekend between $6.5M-$8M for the Sundance hit. After stirring up a buying frenzy at the festival back in January, Dope is expected to be one of the biggest indie films of the year.
The movie everyone is talking about will today break yet another record. Universal's Jurassic World will become the fastest movie to cross the $300M point at the domestic box office. Industry experts predict the dinosaur flick to reach at least $95M this weekend, but could potentially break the $103M marker that Marvel's The Avengers set, which would make Jurassic World the biggest ever second weekend release.
