'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' and 'Game of Thrones' Big Winners at 2016 VES Awards

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Game of Thrones both left the 14th Annual Visual Effects Society Awards with four wins apiece after both earning themselves the most nominations heading into the ceremony.

The VES Awards honours the most outstanding visual effects work of the year. It was hosted by Patton Oswald — which took place at the Beverly Hilton — and was kept light and fast paced.

The Force Awakens won the biggest award of the night for Outstanding Visual Effects along with Outstanding Virtual Cinematography, Outstanding Created Environment and Outstanding Models, all in the feature movie categories. Game of Thrones won its four statuettes for Outstanding Compositing, Outstanding Created Environment, Outstanding Effects Simulations and Outstanding Visual Effects, all in the episodic TV categories.

The Revenant walked away with three gongs with its biggest win coming in the Outstanding Animated Performance category for the bear. The Good Dinosaur was probably the nights surprising winner. The Pixar film won three awards with its most notable coming the Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature category.

Ridley Scott was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work within the medium. Scott gave a lengthy speech that touched on his experiences with visual effects throughout his career.
