'The Big Short' and 'Spotlight' Winners at 2016 Writers Guild Awards

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong The Writers Guild Awards (WGA) took place last night with Charles Randolph and Adam McKay's 'The Big Short' and Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy's 'Spotlight' taking home the nights biggest awards two-weeks before their big night at the Oscars.

Spotlight won out in the Best Original Screenplay category fending off challengers Bridge of Spies, Sicario, Straight Outta Compton and Amy Schumer's Trainwreck.

The Big Short saw off Carol, The Martian, Trumbo and Aaron Sorkin's Steve Jobs scripts in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Another kick in the teeth for Sorkin after being snubbed by the Oscars. Looks like his Golden Globe may be his only victory this award season, unless the BAFTAs are kind to him?

Alex Gibney's Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief won the Best Documentary category.

In the television categories, Mad Men won Best TV Series with Veep taking the Best Comedy Series. Other TV winners came in the way of Mr. Robot for Best New Series, Fargo for Best Adapted Long Form and Saints & Strangers for Best Original Long Form.
