'The Revenant' Wins Top Film Prize at 2016 ASC Awards; Emmanuel Lubezki Threepeats

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong The Revenant won the top film prize at the 30th annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards (ASC). This win marked the third consecutive win for Emmanuel Lubezki who won last year for 'Birdman' and the year before for 'Gravity.' In total, this is Lubezki's fifth ASC Award. He also won in 2011 for 'The Tree of Life' and 'Children of Men' in 2006.

This win continues a rich vein of form for The Revenant making it the standout favourite heading into the Oscars. Earlier in the day, it won five BAFTAS for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Sound and of course, Best Cinematography.

Lubezki was in attendance to pick up his award saying, “It's a tremendous honour to be here with all of you and to be nominated amongst this incredible group.” He continued: “People talk about how brutal the movie is, the conditions. From my perspective, it was an amazing experience. I think the most important thing was to have Alejandro — his passion, his incredibly energy. I think that’s what I’m going to remember most about the film. I share a big chunk of this award with him for taking me on this incredible journey and for being a great teacher and friend.”

Vanja Černjul took home Best Episode of a Regular Series for Netflix’s, Marco Polo. Adam Arkapaw (Macbeth) and Mátyás Erdély (Son Of Saul) tied for the Spotlight Award, and Ridley Scott received the ASC’s Board of Governors Award but wasn’t in attendance to accept as he was in London at the BAFTAS.

Other honourees included Bill Bennett (Presidents Award), Lowell Peterson (Career Achievement in Television Award), Sony’s Grover Crisp (Bud Stone Award of Distinction) John Toll (Lifetime Achievement Award)
