Warner Bros. Crosses the $1 Billion Marker at the Domestic Box Office
Warner Bros. Pictures has exceed the $1 billion threshold at the domestic box office, becoming the only studio ever to reach that benchmark 15 years in a row.
It is also the fastest the Studio has ever reached the billion dollar total in its history. The announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
This achievement is mainly down to the success of four movies that highlights the dynamic range of the studios releases. It began back in January with Clint Eastwood's box office smash American Sniper. Although the movie was released at the back-end of 2014, it crossed over into early 2015 were it continued to bring in strong numbers that made it the highest grossing movie of last year with $350 million.
Peter Jackson's final Hobbit movie, The Battle of Five Armies, was released just before Christmas in 2014, and like American Sniper, its release in theatres crossed over into this year. It grossed an impressive $255 million at the domestic box office — the sixth highest of 2014.
Heading into this year, Warner Bros. have found great success with the new Mad Max movie, Fury Road, from George Miller. The movie is still in limited release and has grossed $147 million to date. Brad Peyton’s disaster movie, San Andreas, starring Dwayne Johnson has grossed big numbers too. Much like Mad Max: Fury Road, San Andreas is also still in theatres and currently stands at $141 million domestically. The earthquake drama, however, has been a big hit internationally, currently standing at $439.6 million at the worldwide box office.
In making the announcement, Fellman said, “We are all very proud of this record-breaking achievement. With a wide range of exciting films upcoming, we look forward to building on this number over the rest of the year.”
Greg Silverman, President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, added, “Hitting a billion dollars in the first six months of the year is an amazing accomplishment, which we share with our partners and all the artists in the Warner Bros. family who bring their considerable talents to our films.”
Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, noted, “This is a terrific milestone, which is the result of the dedication of many people on both sides of the camera. It also reflects the diversity of our film slate, which truly offers something for everyone.”
