Warner Bros. Want James Wan to Direct 'Aquaman' Spinoff Movie
So far we know Jason Momoa will star as Aquaman in the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and then star in a spinoff from that film called Aquaman, which is scheduled for a release in 2018. Now, reports are surfacing that Warner Bros. have a director they'd like to make that spinoff.
Reports are suggesting James Wan is top of Warner Bros. wish list to make Aquaman. Wan has found great success this past week with the release of Furious 7, which broke an opening weekend record for the month of April at the box office. It now seems that success will potentially have Warner Bros. calling.
So far, nothing is concrete regarding this possible hiring and Wan is currently attached to direct the sequel to his previous successful release, The Conjuring — which was a New Line and Warner Bros. movie. That deal was announced by Toby Emmerich of New Line, who said, "James will make an important movie for New Line and Warner Bros or DC, and that is definitely part of the plan, and a reason for bringing him into the family. He’s the only overall director with a deal here, because we see him as a class of one."
As we mentioned, nothing in concrete is in place regarding Wan making Aquaman, but Warner Bros. clearly see this as big release in their upcoming slate. With Wan already attached to make The Conjuring 2, scheduling could become the only real issue. Currently, Aquaman is being penned by Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad, so Warner Bros. are certainly pushing this project ahead and have it placed high on their list of things to do.
